Chapter 14

A short time later we arrived in the French Quarter. Liam pulled up in front of the hotel where Helena said she was staying. We didn’t exactly have a plan, other than maybe talking to her again or just hanging out to see if she went somewhere. I wasn’t looking forward to talking with her again, so I picked the latter of the options. A beautiful old white four-story building sat at the corner of the street. Flags waved from the gorgeous black wrought iron balconies that stretched across the second, third, and fourth floors.

“I’m not going in there alone,” I said.

“Of course not,” Liam said. “Absolutely not,” Thomas added.

“All right, well, I guess we can just go and talk to her again. Maybe we’ll get more information from her. She might know what we’re up to though.”

“Maybe she should know,” Liam said as he shut off the car.

I’d just placed my hand on the door handle to open when I spotted her.

“Wait. She just walked out of the hotel and she’s headed down the sidewalk.” I pointed.

“I suppose we should follow,” Liam said.

We got out of the car and trailed down the sidewalk behind her. She had no idea we were stalking her. It would be kind of awkward to explain if she saw us. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop us from continuing behind her.

“We could just casually act as if we bumped into her,” Thomas said.

“She probably won’t believe that, but we can give it a try.”

I didn’t care. It didn’t matter because I was suspicious of her anyway and I didn’t care if she knew it.

“I just hope she doesn’t walk too far. I never got that catnap and I’m getting tired,” Thomas said. “Maybe we should just call out to her and make her stop.”

“If she doesn’t stop soon, I promise to do that,” I said.

I didn’t have to decide to call out to her or not because she stopped in front of a night club. The neon sign glowed from above the entrance doors. A cab pulled up and a few people climbed out from the backseat. Momentarily I’d lost sight of Helena until the group of people stepped out of the way.

“Oh, now I might wake up a bit,” Thomas said with excitement.

This had piqued his interest. It was the reason he wanted to come to the French Quarter in the first place, not to follow Helena, but just so he could dance. I’d thought he wanted a catnap. We held back a bit on the sidewalk until we watched her walk inside and then we headed toward the door as well. Thank goodness only a short line of people waited outside the door to be let in.

“It’s a good thing I brought my ID,” Thomas said. “You know because everyone tells me I don’t look a day over nineteen.”

I rolled my eyes as I pulled out my driver’s license. “I think they just automatically check anyone under the age of eighty.”

Thomas smirked. “Kick me why don’t you?”

After showing our IDs to the well-muscled bouncer, we stepped into the club.
